As we began to explore our respective cultures in Vietnam and Wales, we exchanged memories of food, mother tongues and the towns and villages where we'd been raised, and it soon became clear that our grandmothers were key figures in teaching us and passing down essential knowledge. Things like recipes and comfort foods, of where to buy the best ingredients. Grandmothers were emblematic of whole towns, of inflections and phrases and language choices.
